A new media-services website is giving print-media and online publishing outlets the opportunity to reach new audiences and generate revenue by showcasing their offerings online. IrishMediaStore.com will act as a platform where publishers, writers and photographers can sell advertising, articles and images.
Founder Derry O’Donnell describes it as an online superstore for media content. As a magazine publisher himself, he is aware of the problems the print media sector is facing, as their market share is eroded by online markets. He wanted to make it easier for traditional media to sell advertising through an online platform.
The site is divided into separate sections for advertisers, writers and photographers. Users can register free online. Once validated, the user can then post up their ads, articles or pictures for sale. Users can set their own prices. There is also a directory where ancillary businesses can offer their services, such as graphic designers for instance.
Irish Media Store will appeal to SMEs who do their own marketing and are looking to reach new audiences at a reduced cost. It will be particularly useful to media sales executives who will be able to fill up white space as a deadline approaches by selling at a discount. It will also give new outlets to writers and photographers looking to extend the shelf life of their work, or to attract an audience for new articles and images.
Because IrishMediaStore.com facilitates the sale of advertising, publishers will be able to sell at a reduced cost and get paid up front. Irish Media Store doesn’t take commission on ads at present, so publications can pass the savings from this on to their advertisers. Writers and photographers will be able to showcase their talents to an audience they might not otherwise have reached and sell their content to multiple non-competing outlets.
The site will enable print publications to compete in an increasingly crowded market space. It will also boost declining revenues for writers and photographers working in the sector. “Businesses need to have a presence offline and online to maximise sales,” says O’Donnell. “We hope to be of great help to the ailing newspaper industry by helping them promote their advertising.”
