IU Bloomington sustainability interns to present projects at fifth annual symposium

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Bloomington's Office of Sustainability will showcase the completed projects of student interns from the 2013-14 Academic Year Internship Program in Sustainability on Friday, April 18.
The fifth annual Academic Year Sustainability Internship Symposium will take place from 11:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Indiana Memorial Union State Rooms East and West, 900 E. Seventh St.
It will include oral and poster presentations and a lunch reception hosted by Indiana Memorial Union Catering. Those interested in attending should register online. This event is free and open to the public.
"Over 220 sustainability interns have provided a vital link between academic programs and campus operations to help transform our campus into a sustainability living learning lab," Director of Sustainability Bill Brown said. "It is a thrill to watch interns grow and learn as they leave their unique legacy of positive change upon which others may build."
As the pilot event for the launching of the Office of Sustainability's Green Events program, the symposium is set up for minimal environmental impact. In addition to serving a seasonal and locally sourced vegetarian lunch, the office has worked with IMU Catering to make the event landfill free, meaning all meal components will be reused or recycled; this is also true for all promotion and decoration materials.
Composting and recycling bins will be available, with no packaging headed to the landfill. Attendees are encouraged to walk, ride the bus or bike to the event. To learn more about the Green Events program or to plan a green event, please visit the Green Events website.
"We hope the Green Events tool will provide event planners with the support needed to experiment with sustainability strategies," said Emilie Rex, assistant director for sustainability. "The 2013-14 Academic Year Internship Program in Sustainability has been a good exercise in testing the Green Events system, and we’re looking forward to sharing the results with attendees."

The IU Office of Sustainability was established in March 2009. The Campus Sustainability Advisory Board is co-chaired by Michael Hamburger, professor of geological sciences, and Peggy Maschino, associate director of business affairs, Physical Plant. Its mission is to develop and implement initiatives to advance sustainability on IU's Bloomington campus.
