IU Kelley School business analytics forum to focus on current challenges and vision for the future

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University's Kelley School of Business will host a forum this week for experienced executives, students, business faculty and others who are on the forefront of applying business analytics in organizations.

Presenters at the Kelley Forum on Business Analytics 2014 on April 3 and 4 at IU Bloomington will share expertise in advanced techniques being applied in finance, accounting and marketing, by retailers and health care providers, and in government and the military.

“Business analytics is a key strategic initiative for the Kelley School,” said Idalene “Idie” Kesner, dean of the Kelley School of Business and the Frank P. Popoff Chair of Strategic Management.

“The vision behind this conference is to bring all of the stakeholders together to discuss challenges and how to approach them so we’re working in concert to harness and understand the incredible amounts of data we’re all generating," Kesner added. "We’re committed to partnerships with businesses and universities around the world to continue to lead the way in business analytics education.”

The keynote speaker will be Mark Zozulia, a consulting principal at Deloitte Consulting LLP and IU alumnus with more than 25 years of experience in the analytics and data management fields. He is a national leader in its information management practice and founding corporate partner of Kelley's Institute for Business Analytics' Advisory Council. He has successfully structured and delivered complex business analytics and enterprise information management programs for numerous companies across multiple industries.

“It’s been a great year seeing the IBA develop into a mature organization, and the interest it is generating in analytics among students, corporate partners and other universities puts it at the top of its class," Zozulia said. “Combine that with the overall culture of innovation and flexibility within the Kelley School, and that’s what truly makes it successful and why we view IU and the IBA as a strategic partner." 

One of the panels focusing on the role of analytics in decision-making, particularly in the public sector, will feature Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Loren M. Reno, executive fellow at the Institute for Defense and Business, who served as deputy chief of staff for logistics, installations and mission support at U.S. Air Force headquarters in Washington, D.C. Also participating will be Lt. Col. (Ret.) Eric Hansen, a former senior military operations research analyst who led a team of 29 analysts at the Joint IED Defeat Organization’s Counter IED Operations Integration Center and now a sales manager at SAS.

This is the second year for the forum, which will open at 4 p.m. Thursday with a panel that discusses how to design an analytics organization. Panelists will include John B. Johns, director of business analytics and strategic insights at Roche Diagnostics Corp.; Tony Saldanha, general manager of business intelligence and consumer services at Procter & Gamble; and Barb Williams, director of information management at Hill-Rom. Jeff Kavanaugh, managing partner at Infosys, will moderate.

The Kelley Forum on Business Analytics 2014 will take place in the Godfrey Executive Education Center, 1275 E. 10th St.

A corporate-student roundtable will close the day, featuring representatives from Angie’s List, Arcelor Mittal, Deloitte, Discover, Dow Agrosciences, FedEx Services, IBM, Infosys, Hill-Rom, Lilly, Procter & Gamble, SAS, SAS JMP, Whirlpool and other companies.
