JDSU Selected by Major Mobile Service Provider for Backhaul Test Solution

Milpitas, Calif., February 16, 2010- JDSU today announced it was recently selected by a major mobile communications service provider to support its mobile backhaul transition from time-division multiplexing (TDM) to Ethernet.  JDSU’s NetComplete® Ethernet OAM service assurance solution, including Ethernet test, performance and service level agreement (SLA) monitoring solutions, was selected to enable the quality deployment of bandwidth-intensive mobile services and applications, including mobile digital video and streaming video.
 
Ethernet backhaul, or the high-speed point-to-point connectivity between the 3G cell site (NodeB) and the radio network controller (RNC) located at the mobile switching office (MSO), is a priority issue from both a cost and service performance perspective for wireless carriers. In a

, Michael Howard, principal analyst for carrier and data center networks at Infonetics Research, states that more than 100 operators are now deploying HSPA with a coming wave of HSPA+ upgrades, WiMAX, and LTE to handle skyrocketing mobile data traffic. The most cost-effective way to do this, he adds, is to transition from TDM to packet IP/Ethernet, which is driving the mobile backhaul equipment market.

These functions enable not only the rapid cost effective transition to HSPA, HSPA+ and LTE but also the accurate identification and troubleshooting of service impacting issues. The solution includes Ethernet services turn-up testing and validation combined with service performance and SLA monitoring. By monitoring service performance and SLA conformance of the Ethernet backhaul, the mobile service provider can proactively monitor and manage the service and avoid costly service outages.
