JettStream's asthma nebulizer accessory approved for clinical trials by St. Charles Health System

March 11, 2013 - Bend, OR - (PressReleasePoint) - JettStream Inc., a Bend medical device startup, has announced approval for clinical trials of its JettPak asthma nebulizer accessory by the St. Charles Health System.

"This is an important milestone for the company," said JettStream co-founder and lead engineer Matt Smith. "With this approval, we've been given the green light to begin small-scale manufacturing of the JettPak."

JettStream was incorporated in 2012 after company co-founder and president Sarah Cota became frustrated with current medicine delivery systems for her asthmatic son, Jett.

"The doctors give you a nebulizer and a mask, they tell you how to use it but what they don't tell you is kids hate that mask," explained Cota. "And when they fight their treatment, they only get a fraction of their medicine."

Regular nebulizer treatments are vital for children who have persistent asthma. The inhaled corticosteroids help to reduce inflammation in the lungs to prevent or mitigate asthma attacks. But in order for nebulizer medicine to be administered, the child must remain still while inhaling the medicated mist slowly and deeply.

Smith and Cota designed the JettPak to treat children while they are asleep, helping to ensure a more efficient delivery. "When they're sleeping, children are naturally breathing in a manner conducive to treatment, and they won't even realize they're getting the medicine," explains Cota. "There's no struggle at all."

On Jan, 29th 2013, the Institutional Review Board of the St. Charles Health System, a panel of experts that reviews local clinical trials for risk and participant safety, granted approval for in-home use of the JettPak. The trials will be conducted over three months beginning in May, 2013 and will help JettStream evaluate the safety, ease of use and efficacy of the JettPak.

JettStream is currently accepting applications for the JettPak clinical trial. In order to qualify, participants must be parents with children between 18 months and 10 years old who are currently undergoing inhaled corticosteroid therapy.
