John F. Kennedy High School Counselor Honored by Colorado's CollegeInvest
Laura DeMoulin named April Counselor of the Month
(DENVER, CO–September 4, 2009) CollegeInvest, in partnership with the Colorado Council on High School/College Relations, is proud to honor Laura DeMoulin of John F. Kennedy High School as April's Counselor of the Month.
DeMoulin was nominated by her colleague Emily Rivera. Rivera speaks highly of DeMoulin's commitment to helping the students of JFK High School explore a broad array of higher education opportunities, and for her dedication to creating a college-going culture among students.
"Under Laura's leadership, we have seen the percentage of our graduating seniors who go on to college increase from 60 percent in 2006 to 84 percent in 2008," wrote Rivera.
Beyond meeting with every single junior and senior student in the high school at least twice a year, DeMoulin offers lessons and support to 8th graders who will attend JFK High School and their parents to help set them on the right track for college admission.
DeMoulin also helps to host one of only three college fairs in Colorado that allows students to meet with out-of-state as well as in-state college representatives.
"Laura is passionate about the college exploration process and her energy is contagious," says Rivera.
The Counselor of the Month program is designed to give counselors the recognition they deserve.
"High school counselors are unsung heroes, encouraging students to dream and accomplish their goals," said Misti Ruthven of CollegeInvest, Colorado's not-for-profit higher education financing resource. "Counselors often go unrecognized as champions for students to go on to bigger and better things and to follow their dreams."
