John Mathias to Speak at 7th Drug Design & Medicinal Chemistry Conference, May 8-10, 2013, Boston MA

Boston, MA, United States., February 17, 2013 - (PressReleasePoint) - John Mathias, Senior Director and Head of Medicinal Chemistry Inflammation & Remodeling at Pfizer, will present at GTC’s 7th Drug Design & Medicinal Chemistry Conference, May 8-10, 2013 in Boston, MA.

Dr. Mathias will discuss the current state of high throughput screening (HTS) in drug design in his presentation, “New Horizons in Hit & Target Identification.”  HTS has become the target of criticism, and is often cited as one of the reasons pharma’s productivity has declined in recent years.

Data from Pfizer, however, supports a much contrary view. Dr. Mathias will highlight specific examples where HTS hit-identification has significantly advanced Pfizer’s current clinical and preclinical portfolio.  He will share the features that make for successful hit-identification campaigns, as well as measure this success across a range of target classes.

He will also discuss other innovate approaches in HTS, such as approaches to compound file and subset screening,  and the use of chemogenomic libraries and precompetitive screening collaborations to identify probes and targets.

Dr. Mathias has been Global Head of the High Throughput Screening Centre of Emphasis at Pfizer since 2009, where he is responsible for leading the HTS group’s hit identification efforts for all of Pfizer’s research units. In May 2011 he was appointed Head of Medicinal Chemistry for the Inflammation & Remodeling Group within the BioTherapeutics Chemistry Organization.

GTC’s 7th Drug Design & Medicinal Chemistry conference provides a forum for leaders from both industry and academia working in the fields of medicinal chemistry, computational chemistry, structural biology and related areas to review advances in established methods in drug discovery and discuss hot topics such as epigenetics, binding kinetics, data sharing and many more.
