The Jonathan Mann Health and Human Rights Lecture, an Annual College of Population Health Lecture is set for Monday, Oct. 9 at 5:30 p.m. in Mitchell Hall Rm. 101. The lecture, titled “Global Health Equity and Urban Design” features Dr. Marco Akerman, a professor at the School of Public Health, University of São Paulo, Brazil. The event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Akerman, who focuses his consulting, teaching and research in evaluation of public policies, intersectoral and social determinants of health, will share how to prioritize and create strategies to improve health equity and democracy in urban settings using the principles of the Curitiba Declaration.

The Curitiba Declaration (2016) embodies a spirit of local and global commitment to democracy, equity, and justice. This document has 21 recommendations for all sectors of society; i.e. government at all levels, international organizations, the health sector, economic development, urban design, the citizenry and all community members, to enhance social rights and “health for all’ in an inclusive and sustainable world.

Dr. Ackerman is also the head of the Department of Policy, Management and Health; Latin America Vice President of the International Union of Health Promotion and Education (2010-2016); and was Chair of the Working Group on Health Promotion and Sustainable Development of the Brazilian Association of Public Health (2010-2016).

The lecture is co-sponsored by the UNM School of Architecture and Planning, the UNM Health Sciences Center Office of Community Health and NM APA.
