Osceola Township (Houghton Co.) Supervisor Steven T. Karpiak, Jr., has joined the Michigan Townships Association (MTA) Board of Directors, after being elected to serve as MTA District 1 director.

As District 1 director, Karpiak will represent township officials from Gogebic, Ontonagon, Houghton and Keweenaw counties on the MTA Board.

Karpiak was first elected supervisor in 2004, his first position in local government. He also serves as treasurer of the Copper County Trails National Byway Commission and is current vice president of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel (Houghton-Keweenaw Chapter).

As an MTA Board member, Karpiak hopes to be a voice for the western Upper Peninsula and work to keep townships as a viable form of government.
