KEN HAYCOCK WINS THE AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION 2010 BETA PHI MU AWARD
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — April 21, 2010 —Dr. Ken Haycock, professor and director of the School of Library and Information Science at San Jose State University and coauthor ofThe Portable MLIS: Insights from the Experts(Libraries Unlimited, 2008), has been named the recipient of the American Library Association’s 2010 Beta Phi Mu Award. The award, donated by the Beta Phi Mu International Library Science Honorary Society, is given annually to a library school faculty member or to an individual for notable service to education in librarianship.
Dr. Haycock was selected by the Jury for his long and illustrious career as an educator and mentor. Haycock is also recognized for his outstanding service to librarianship in the United States and Canada; his history of leadership in a variety of important library organizations, institutions, government agencies and boards; and his admirable record of research, publication, professional activity and honors. Finally, Haycock was chosen for his lifelong commitment to scholarship, the University community and the improvement of teaching and learning.
Haycock was previously director of the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies at the University of British Columbia and has developed, led, and reviewed academic, public, school and special libraries. Dr. Haycock is immediate past president of the Association for Library and Information Science Education and a past member of the Executive Board of the American Library Association, among others, and has taught graduate courses in foundations and management. Dr. Haycock is a prolific writer and is the recipient of several honors and awards, including the American Library Association Herbert and Virginia White Award, the Canadian Library Association Outstanding Service to Librarianship Award, the Canadian School Library Association Margaret B. Scott Award of Merit, the Association for Library and Information Science Service Award (2008) and the Award for Professional Contributions to Library and Information Science Education.
