Sally Narrows of Port Washington, Virginia always believed that she was related to someone famous. After using several websites that claimed to help her find her ancestors and build a family tree, she was unsuccessful. It wasn't until performing a typo while conducting a legal search through e-discovery software that she found her long, lost ancestor.
"I was supposed to be conducting a legal search for one of my employer's upcoming trials", explained Sally Narrows. "I was tired and accidently typed something in the search field wrong. It came up with this court ruling from sometime in the 1950s."
The court ruling that came up from the e-discovery software showed that a defense attorney by the name of James Narrows. A warm feeling came over Sally Narrows when she read the court ruling.
"I was trying to figure out why this court ruling felt like it hit home to me", said Sally Narrows. "The topic wasn't anything I was supposed to be researching, but there was just some gut instinct that this entire ruling related to me."
Sally Narrows went back to researching for her employer, but she couldn't shake the feeling that finding that court ruling with that name was fate. Later in the week Sally Narrows got the idea that she should research the defense attorney further.
"I just had this feeling that there was a reason that search came up", said Sally Narrows. "I couldn't let it go."
Sally Narrows conducted some outside research into James Narrows. She looked into previous court records, conducted a search online, and even called some people in the area that he practiced.
"I was able to find a person who personally knew James Narrows", said Sally Narrows. "It appears as if he left his brothers behind to pursue a career in law. As it turned out, one of those brothers was my father."
Sally Narrows contacted James Narrows, who is currently residing in a nursing home just outside of New Orleans. She shared stories with him and talked to him.
"I discovered that James Narrows was one of the leading defense lawyers in his time", said Sally Narrows. "We have so much in common it's amazing. We're planning on meeting in the summer."
Sally Narrows attributes her ability to find her uncle to the e-discovery software program.
"Who knew that a small typo could transform my life", said Sally Narrows. "If this program hadn't had all my uncle's court filings in there I would have never found him. It really is amazing."
