A distinguished lecturer at Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) will discuss cutting edge technology in vertical wind turbines which are more environmentally friendly compared to conventional horizontal wind turbines.

Ahmedabad, Gujarat, February 03, 2014 -(PressReleasePoint)- A distinguished lecturer at Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) will discuss cutting edge technology in vertical wind turbines which are more environmentally friendly compared to conventional horizontal wind turbines. The lecture will be delivered by Prof John O Dabiri of California Institute of Technology (Caltech), USA on Friday (January 31, 2014) as a part “Roddam Narasimha Distinguished Lecture” at IITGN.

Dr Dabiri, professor of Aeronautics and Bioengineering at Caltech, will talk about his research on vertical wind turbines. Prof Dabiri has borrowed the configurations of schooling fish and seagrass beds to arrange the lay-outs of vertical-axis wind turbines. Dr Dabiri, says that this breakthrough will help in generating more energy than conventional horizontal wind turbines in a given area of land.

Despite being one of the cleanest ways to generate electricity, there are a variety of environmental concerns associated with wind power generation. It requires vast tracts of land and impacts on birds and animals, such as bats, who collide with the wind turbines. Vertical wind turbines address these issues to a considerable extent.

The magazine, Popular Science, has named Prof Dabiri as one of its "Brilliant 10" scientists in 2008. For his research in bioinspired wind energy, Bloomberg Businessweek magazine listed him among its Technology Innovators in 2012, and the MIT Technology Review magazine named him one of its 35 innovators under 35 in 2013. He is currently the Chair of the Faculty at Caltech.

“Roddam Narasimha Distinguished Lecture”, which has was set up in 2012, aims at bringing young distinguished professionals to the institute to present their works in areas of national importance. The Lecture series was instituted with the support from professor from Vanderbilt University, Prof Amrutur Anilkumar.
