Leon Holmes’ Brings the Colors of Australia to the Big Apple
NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature the original work of Fremantle artist Leon Holmes in Sensorial Perspectives
New York, NY, USA, March 12, 2013 - (PressReleasePoint) -Leon Holmes’ oil depictions of the natural world’s hidden corners walk the line between photorealism and surrealism. Though his desert hills and panoramic views of ships at sea are meticulously detailed, from the glint of sunlight to a momentary breeze in the air, Holmes imbues his paintings with a concentrated emotional punch. Perspective and frame are slightly skewed, as if the viewer is lying on the ground, neck at an inhuman angle. Colors are fragmented, as in life, but made slightly richer, as if energized from within. A Holmes landscape is bold and pointed in its desire to throw the viewer off balance, to reflect nature as a complicated terrain of surprises that both enter and inform the viewer’s own real world space.
With their lively brushwork and unpredictable palette, the paintings are as alive as the planet that inspires them. Although he maintains studios in Australia and Germany, Holmes favors painting en plein air and spends a large part of his time traveling in order to do so.
