UK, December 19, 2011 -- Fifty local children from 25 schools in the Selby, Tadcaster andSherburn areas enjoyed fun and games at Drax Power Station (”Drax”)in an annual scheme designed to promote road safety.
The children visited Drax over two days where they got to meetthe popular ‘Seatbelt Sheriff’ and swear an oath of allegiance toalways stay safe and ‘Buckle up’ when travelling by car andbus.
This is the fourth year Drax has hosted the ‘Junior Road SafetyOfficer Day’ which gives pupils the chance to come together andlearn about safety techniques as part of the scheme which isorganised by North Yorkshire County Council and sponsored byDrax.
The event started with a talk from Ann Smallwood, NorthYorkshire County Council Road Safety and Travel Awareness, outlining what it means to be a JRSO, followed by a game of RoadSafety Bingo, using road signs that the children had to match totheir play cards. Other presentations came from Drax health andsafety operatives, fire and road safety crews and local PoliceCommunity Support Officers. To round off the day the JRSOs enjoyeda guided tour of the power station.
Ann Smallwood said: “The continued support of Drax has helped usto widen our road safety message across schools and promote safebehaviour when children are walking, cycling or in the car.”
Police Community Support Officer Caroline Ward said: “By usingthis fun approach we hope to encourage children to use seat beltsat all times. If they also remind their parents to do the same thenthat’s great!”
