Local Machine Builder Advises Technology Classes
Turner Machine Company invests in future machinists and machine builders. Students get a competitive employment advantage.
Smyrna, TN, July 9, 2008 (PressReleasePoint)--Jeff Turner, president of Turner Machine Company, will begin his second term this fall on the advisory board for the machining department of the Tennessee Technology Center at Murfreesboro. Turner Machine Company is one of 5 local machine shops presiding on the board. Members play an important role in keeping the class curriculum up to date with current market and technology trends in the machining industry. They offer advice on course content and equipment purchases, supply drawings for class projects, observe classes, offer tours of their facilities, and donate educational materials.
Mr. Turner gave this semester’s class a facility tour during Turner Machine’s open house last April. Turner Machine Company also sponsored a student from the school in a championship organized by SkillsUSA, a national nonprofit organization that supports teachers and prepares students for careers in trade, technical, health and skilled service occupations. The student was one of six contenders from across Tennessee who qualified for the state level by completing a paper examination. He placed 1st at the April event, and 27th at the national competition last week.
By having companies who are presently competing in local markets help with the daunting task of keeping up to date in the industry, the class instructor, himself a machinist, has more time to devote to teaching and preparing his students for the job market.
