Lockheed Martin Leads Week Of Activities To Captivate
DALLAS/FORT WORTH, TX, February 16th, 2009 -- Lockheed Martin’s [LMT: NYSE] two North Texas business units will support local activities to promote math and science education for students during National Engineers Week, February 15-21.
Throughout the week, employees at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics in Fort Worth and Missiles and Fire Control in Grand Prairie will reach out to more than 10,000 North Texas students in all grade levels to captivate the next generation of engineers and demonstrate how engineering impacts our everyday lives.
In Fort Worth, nearly 5,000 elementary and middle school students will feel the power of engineering in their own hands at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History through interactive lessons led by Aeronautics employees. Additionally, employees will visit schools throughout Tarrant County to share the story of powered flight. Employees will celebrate engineering at work with a solar car competition and flying the F-35 cockpit simulator.
In Grand Prairie, Missiles and Fire Control employee volunteers will engage 3,000 Grand Prairie, Arlington and Mansfield students with interactive presentations, and 160 high school and college students will visit the facility to explore aspects of research, development and manufacturing. Lockheed Martin volunteers also will host several interactive demonstrations at the Dallas Museum of Nature and Science exploring plasma speakers and the inner workings of a Wii remote. Employees will also partner with Southern Methodist University at the annual Visioneering event, where they will focus on the energy sources of tomorrow. At the facility, employees will put their engineering skills to the test in various contests ranging from paper airplane design to engineering Jeopardy. The winners of a high-tech invention contest among employees will also be revealed.
Lockheed Martin is a corporate sponsor of National Engineers Week, which was founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers. Activities throughout the week promote recognition among parents, teachers and students of the importance of a technical education and the high level of math, science, and technological literacy needed to pursue engineering careers. Each year National Engineers Week reaches thousands of schools, businesses and community groups across the United States.
Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 146,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The corporation reported 2008 sales of $42.7 billion.
