Being National Severe Weather Preparedness Week, it’s a good time to reflect on Superstorm Sandy.  In October 2013, Superstorm Sandy smashed into the Northeast, devastating communities with 90 mph winds and storm surges of more than 12 feet. More than 7.5 million people lost power, and damage estimates top $50 billion.

While millions of people were concerned with basic needs like staying warm and keeping dry, businesses were also scrambling to deal with their own basic needs. But companies that had backup and disaster recovery plans were able to weather the storm far better than those that did not. Datto provided valuable services to many companies in the path of Sandy, both before, during and after the storm.

Since meteorologists were able to warn us about Sandy in advance, it made sense to start preparations well ahead of the storm’s arrival. Any intelligent business continuity plan is built on preparation, and Datto started by telling their partners what steps they should take ahead of time. Datto advised partners to confirm that their systems were ready to be virtualized off-site in case their infrastructures became unavailable during the storm.

During the storm, the Datto staff worked tirelessly to ensure that Partners had the support they needed. Partners were able to get in touch with Datto through the new Direct to Tech initiative, and the Datto team handled virtualizations as soon as they came in. During the storm, Datto was able to help quite a few companies keep their businesses going and thrive under the harshest conditions.
