Commenting on the second reading in the Lords of the House of Lords Reform (No. 2) Bill, Alexandra Runswick, Director of Unlock Democracy said:

“This Lords Reform Bill makes some small changes but ignores the unelected elephant in the room. The House of Lords cannot be reformed without making its members accountable to the public at the ballot box.

This Bill will give politicians an excuse to put off real Lords reform. Instead of worrying about how peers leave the Lords, we need to change how they get there in the first place. What the House of Lords needs is elections, not more tinkering at the margins.”
