Lovely Professional University and Denim Club India to jointly create HIV and AIDS Awareness Hub

As a first step in the joint initiative between Denim Club India and Lovely Professional University (LPU), to spread awareness about HIV and AIDS among youth, an awareness session was organised at Baldev Raj Auditorium, Lovely Professional University (LPU) Campus, Phagwara on 15th December, 2009.

New Delhi – As a first step in the joint initiative between Denim Club India and Lovely Professional University (LPU), to spread awareness about HIV and AIDS among youth, an awareness session was organised at Baldev Raj Auditorium, Lovely Professional University (LPU) Campus, Phagwara on 15th December, 2009 from 5 p.m. onwards.
The session comprised of screening of 'Positive', a short film by Farhan Akhtar, produced in the AIDS JAAGO project; an interactive session to dispel myths and provide accurate information pertaining to HIV and AIDS was conducted by Commonwealth Youth Ambassador Mr. Gaurav Gaur, Assistant Professor, Department of Social Work, Punjab University, Chandigarh and National Trainer for the Targeted Intervention Programmes by the National AIDS Control Organization (NACO); screening of a short Audio Video presentation about the India Denim Day campaign; and felicitation of resource persons.

The LPU students were very forthcoming and proactive in raising queries pertaining to HIV and AIDS. Some of the participants brought up the issue of their inhibition to speak about topics of sexuality and HIV with each other due to the apprehension of being ridiculed.

Expressing her views about the session, Ms. Rashmi Mittal, Executive Dean, Lovely Professional University, said, “It was wonderful to see Denim Club India presenting before the students. I see a great enthusiasm amongst the students after the awareness session. Many more interactions and exposures would be welcomed from our side. A social cause like this can be taken up in any possible way and would be highly appreciated by LPU.”

Mr. Rajesh Dudeja, Founder, Denim Club India, said “Lovely Professional University has been very forthcoming and we are privileged to have got the chance to associate with LPU for the HIV and AIDS campaign. With the support and participation of LPU, we look forward to reaching out to a large number of youth in Punjab, and sensitising them about issues pertaining to HIV and AIDS.”

Lovely Professional University and Denim Club India shall work towards creating an HIV & AIDS Awareness Hub at the LPU campus in Phagwara, drawing upon the large number of students at LPU, and organize Awareness Events and Activities on a regular basis.

The year long HIV and AIDS awareness campaign by Denim Club India with the theme "Do Something and Make A Difference" was launched on 1st December 2009 and will continue till 30th November, 2010. During this period, different segments and sections of civil society will be targeted through this campaign. The campaign will reach out to the youth in schools and colleges, the low income group workers and decision makers / senior executives in industrial establishments, and general public by way of arranging for interactive sessions.
