Southampton, UK, September 15, 2009 (PressReleasePoint) -- The featured product will be the Sony Scorpion SmartCam 3D. An intelligent camera system that can mimic the stereo vision of the human eyes.

Sony is a leading manufacturer of industrial cameras and is planning the technical day with Scorpion Vision Ltd to present the latest innovations in their machine vision product portfolio. Scorpion Vision Ltd is a supplier of machine vision software and uses Sony cameras in it’s product offerings. The event will feature a new Sony/Scorpion package called the Sony SmartCam, a high performance industrial camera combined with a PC running Microsoft Windows in a very small package, measuring just 141mm x 14mm.

As the camera contains a modern, fast computer processor it is able to run the latest automation software that can analyse images, monitoring for certain conditions and send outputs in the form of pass/fails or measurement data. The more advanced aspects of the camera/software combination uses special algorithms which provide the ability to make measurements ‘on the fly’. The latest algorithm creates a 3D stereoscopic model that allows the software to calculate the height of an object as well as it’s position in the X & Y planes. This is particularly useful for robot guidance and can dramatically enhance the ability of a robot to identify and pick up objects placed in a haphazard fashion and in any order.

The Sony Technical Day will take place on Friday, 10th December at Sony HQ in Weybridge, Surrey and is free of charge to any individual or organisation with a professional interest in manufacturing and automation.
