The School of Modern Languages and Cultures' Modern China Studies Programme is hosting a public talk by award-winning Chinese author Su Tong. Su is a prolific and provocative author whose works have earned him a place at the centre of China's literary scene.

Su is a prolific and provocative author whose works have earned him a place at the centre of China's literary scene. He talks about gender issues, specifically, the place of women in his writing, focusing on his female characters.

Su Tong (蘇童) is the pen name of a Mainland Chinese writer born in 1963 in Suzhou. He graduated from Beijing Normal University with a degree in Chinese literature and now lives in Nanjing.

Known for his controversial writing style, which has often put him at odds with the authorities, Su is regarded as one of the pioneering novelists in China. He has written seven full-length novels and over 200 short stories, some of which had been translated into English, German, Italian and French.

He is best known in the West for his bookWives and Concubines, published in 1990. The book was adapted into the film,Raise the Red Lanternby director Zhang Yimou, and has since been released under the name given to the film.

Su Tong's most recent novel, "Boat to Redemption", translated by Howard Goldblatt, won the 2009 Man Asian Literary Prize.

This event is held in conjunction with The Man Hong Kong International Literary Festival 2010, and is supported by Man Investments and Dymocks.

The University of Hong Kong's Modern China Studies Programme was established in 2008. Combining the perspectives and curricular strengths of a variety of disciplines, it aims at giving students a broad-based education on modern China - its language, culture, history, society, economy, governance, environment, and people.
