Main message body

Eversley, Hampshire, UK, 28 January 2009 (PressReleasePoint) - An eMapSite developer is to show the world’s largest gathering of open source enthusiasts how to deploy their database skills for the management of spatial data.

John Powell will argue that MySQL database functions have the capacity to match those of proprietary GIS software for the most cost-effective storage, retrieval and analysis of vast quantities of data.

His presentation, at the forthcoming MySQL Conference and Expo in Santa Clara, California, will include practical examples from his own experience of location technology such as the real-time monitoring of boats in offshore windfarm construction.

Mr Powell, who has worked as a GI developer at eMapSite for five years, said he would discuss the loading, indexing and further analysis of spatial data through Java programming combined with MySQL applications, tools and software.

He said: “These functions can allow data to be analysed in ways that have traditionally been the preserve of expensive, proprietary GIS. I want to show how you can combine Java and SQL to build sophisticated, distributed and customised applications with all of the powerful capabilities of GIS.”

Mr Powell’s open source work has already benefited eMapSite partners and clients by adding to the range of location intelligence solutions available online from the company.

More than 2,000 computer scientists and open source enthusiasts are expected to attend the MySQL conference, which takes place at the Santa Clara Conference Center from the 20th to 23th April, 2009.
