Actress, Activist and Author Will Discuss the Power of Reinvention

The Smithsonian Associates presents an evening with Marlo Thomas Thursday, May 1, at 6:45 p.m. in McEvoy Auditorium at the Smithsonian’s Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture. In a conversation with NPR senior national correspondent, Linda Wertheimer, Thomas will discuss her new book, It Ain’t Over…Till It’s Over (Simon and Schuster), which profiles 60 women who are proving it is never too late to live out a dream.

In her decades in the spotlight, Thomas has taken on the roles of actress, producer, writer and activist—and she has made each of them distinctly her own. From television’s perky Ann Marie in That Girl to the author of six books (including two Free To Be…You and Me volumes fondly recalled by children raised in the ’70s and ’80s) to her work as an advocate for children’s health and women’s issues, Thomas has always underscored the importance possibilities—and the ways that people fulfill them—play in people’s lives.

Her book, It Ain’t Over…Till It’s Over, takes a close look at women who have defined and realized those possibilities. Subtitled “Reinventing Your Life—and Realizing Your Dreams—Anytime, at Any Age,” Thomas’ book tells the personal stories of women who have proven that it is never too late to get a Ph.D., travel the world, launch a business, follow a creative impulse, make a family recipe famous or fill a void in life with a challenging new experience.

Although each of the subjects profiled has a unique story, Thomas finds “what they all have in common is that they discovered that there are opportunities and possibilities all around us if we choose to see them. And we all have the power to change our lives for the better—we just have to make the decision and do it.”

Ticket prices for the Smithsonian Associates’ presentation are $47 for general admission and $40 for Associate members. For tickets and information, the public may call (202) 633-3030 or visit Thomas’ book will be available for signing at the program.
