ESCANABA, Mich.--Dex. 26, 2013--The Plum Creek Foundation recently awarded a $2,000 grant to the Marquette Alger College Access Network to help fund the organization’s College Coaches program, which matches mentors with at-risk 11th and 12th grade students to encourage postsecondary education.

In collaboration with Big Brother Big Sisters of Marquette and Alger Counties, volunteer mentors will be partnered with low-income students aspiring to complete a postsecondary degree or credential program. According to Frannie Belton, program coordinator, mentors will meet with their student for 4-6 hours each month over the course of the school year.

“The students in this program aspire to attend college but do not have the resources necessary to navigate the process, which can be very daunting,” said Belton. “Many of the mentees are first-generation college students and, with the help of the Plum Creek Foundation, we can help them overcome these barriers.”

In addition to discussing postsecondary degree options, mentors will advise students on financial literacy, financial aid, social responsibility, community engagement, student expectations in a postsecondary program and career options. Mentors will also plan outings with their students to strengthen the mentor/mentee relationship. The grant will go towards the expenses of recruitment, screening of the volunteers, training and transportation fees.

The mission of the Marquette Alger College Access Network is to encourage and support students of Marquette and Alger counties in pursing and completing a college degree or postsecondary credential. For more information, visit www.mqtalgcan.com.
