December 02, 2013 – Miami, FL MasterCard, a leading technology company in the payments industry, held its annual MasterCard Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) Payment Innovation Forum for its customers, featuring speeches from industry experts and a showcase of cutting-edge payment solutions. With a focus on the digital revolution and the wide regional adoption and use of smartphone devices– MasterCard highlighted its response to the convergence of the physical and digital worlds and its effects on commerce.MasterCard LAC Payment Innovation Forum 2013

“The world is changing fast, shaped by mobile payments, digital commerce, and innovative payment solutions that are displacing cash, checks and other paper-based tender. Consumers are also evolving in the way they buy things, and our goal is to make that buying experience as simple and secure as possible,” said Gilberto Caldart, president, MasterCard LAC.

During the first day of the three-day event, MasterCard brought various payment innovations to life, demonstrating the many ways it is revolutionizing the shopping experience. The showcase offered a glimpse into the products and services that transform and enhance convenience and security for consumers and merchants alike.

Payment technology highlights for consumers included:

  • ShopThis! with MasterPass™ShopThis! with MasterPass is designed to let readers discover and purchase items from their favorite magazines advertising and editorial pages, without ever leaving the page itself. MasterCard recently began piloting ShopThis! with MasterPass in partnership with WIRED Magazine.
  • MasterPass by MasterCard – This digital payment platform allows you to shop online or via mobile without having to re-enter the same contact and payment information every time you shop. It simplifies the shopping experience for consumers by storing shipping, personal and card information to make digital checkouts much easier.
  • Wearable Devices – MasterCard Labs, MasterCard’s research and development arm, shows how wearable devices together with digital wallets can be shopping devices — which can change the way consumers shop and pay for things and how merchants interact with their customers.
  • ZUUMwith Zuum, the mobile phone becomes an actual payment device.  Consumers in Brazil are using Zuum to make deposits, transfers, and refill mobile airtime.  Zuum is a company born out of a partnership between MasterCard and Telefonica.
  • Qantas Cash – This next generation loyalty card from Qantas Airlines makes international travel more convenient. It allows members to pre-load up to nine foreign currencies to spend overseas; at any of the 35 million locations MasterCard is accepted. Even better – the card can also be used as your boarding pass.
  • SASSA Debit MasterCardIssued by the South Africa Social Security Administration, a key feature of the card is its biometric functionality. Used to identify social grant recipients using fingerprints, voice and other personal information, the payment cards can only be used by the approved beneficiary to collect his/her grant.

Payment technology highlights for businesses included:

  • The Business Network – Launched during the forum, this web portal offers small businesses with the opportunity to leverage MasterCard tools to engage in B2B ecommerce by increasing financial control, improving their cash management flows and “Enabling Entrepreneurship”.
  • Travel ControllerMasterCard’s answer for companies searching for better ways to manage travel spend. The launch of the MasterCard Travel delivers better controls and reconciliation for managing T&E, one of the largest controllable expenses within a company.
  • Simplify Commerce – Simplify Commerce is a developer-friendly platform that makes it easy for merchants to accept e-commerce and mobile commerce payments, regardless of payment brand, in a matter of minutes.
