ALEXANDRIA, Va. (Jan. 15, 2014) – National Credit Union Administration Board Chairman Debbie Matz has appointed Board Member Richard Metsger as NCUA’s representative on the Board of Directors of NeighborWorks America, one of the nation’s preeminent affordable housing and community development organizations.

“I am honored to be asked to serve as a director of this vitally important organization, which serves more than 4,500 communities nation-wide,” Metsger said. “I look forward to working with my distinguished colleagues in their efforts to create affordable housing opportunities for low-income Americans and their families in safe, sustainable neighborhoods.”

NeighborWorks America’s Board consists of the heads of the financial regulatory agencies and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, who are presidential appointees subject to Senate confirmation, or their statutorily designated representatives. Metsger joins NeighborWorks America’s Board Chairman Sarah Bloom Raskin, Member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve; Thomas Curry, Comptroller of the Currency; Carol Galante, Commissioner of the Federal Housing Administration; and Jeremiah Norton, Member of the Board of Directors of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Matz served as NeighborWorks America’s Vice Chair since November 2012, and she previously served on the NeighborWorks America Board from 2002-2005.

“This unique organization has grown tremendously since my first term,” Matz said. “NeighborWorks America has become a national leader in foreclosure mitigation counseling by helping millions of homeowners survive the financial crisis. NeighborWorks has earned national recognition by providing state-of-the-art training in affordable housing and community development. I strongly encourage credit union officials to partner with NeighborWorks through its network of affiliates in their communities. Where affordable lenders join forces with affordable housing providers, these partnerships empower consumers, strengthen communities, and stimulate our nation’s economy.”

“We’re honored to have Board Member Metsger join the NeighborWorks America Board,” said NeighborWorks America CEO Eileen M. Fitzgerald. “He is a public service veteran who has tremendousexperience in housing and finance that will help guide NeighborWorks America as we work to strengthen communities all across the country.”

For more than 35 years, NeighborWorks America has created opportunities for people to improve their lives and strengthen their communities by providing access to homeownership and to safe and affordable rental housing. NeighborWorks America supports a network of more than 235 independent, community-based nonprofits located in every state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. In the last five years, NeighborWorks organizations have generated more than $19.5 billion in reinvestment in these communities.
