Michael Morrison Jr. (photo courtesy Brandon Grecinger) of the Florence RedWolves tied the single-season record for saves in a Coastal Plain League season tonight after closing out his 18th save during the team’s first game of a double-header with Fayetteville. He now shares the record with Fayetteville’s Luke Prihoda who also notched 18 saves in 2006.

Heading into his sophomore season at Coastal Carolina in the fall, this was Morrison’s first taste of collegiate summer baseball and he has been impressive to say the least. In addition to his 18 saves, he holds a 0.36 ERA having allowed only one earned run all season in 24 2/3 innings pitched while also striking out 29 batters.

His strong play has helped lead Florence to both the first and second half division titles. The RedWolves enter the Petitt Cup playoffs as the number one seed in the West and will take on High Point-Thomasville in a best-of-three game series starting on Wednesday.

Morrison had a chance to break the record in game two of Florence’s double-header with Fayetteville, but the SwampDogs ultimately prevailed 7-4 leaving him no shot at a record breaking 19th save on the year.

The 6-2, 190 pound right-hander tossed 25 2/3 innings as a freshman for Coastal Carolina finishing with a a 4.91 ERA, one save and 29 strikeouts. Prior to attending CCU, Morrison was a teammate of Asheboro’s Connor Owings at Gilbert High School in South Carolina where they both contributed to a 2A State Baseball Championship.
