Middlesex University Dubai, London’s first and only university campus in the UAE, has launched a significant new academic work on tourism in the 21st century. The book, entitled “Tourism and Citizenship: Rights, Freedoms and Responsibilities in the Global Order”, was officially launched at the University’s campus at Knowledge Village, Dubai, and will be published internationally by Routledge.
The book was developed and produced jointly by Dr Marcus L. Stephenson, Associate Professor of Tourism Management at Middlesex University Dubai, and Dr. Raoul V. Bianchi, Principal Lecturer in International Tourism at the University of East London.
The book was the latest in a series of successful publications by the academics. Dr. Stephenson had published widely on the sociology of tourism and had also conducted extensive tourism-based research in the Caribbean, Middle East, Tanzania and the UK. Dr Bianchi had previously published on the political economy of international tourism and has focused on the interaction of politics, the economy and civil society within the context of tourism.
Dr. Stephenson commented “We are proud of this achievement. I therefore thank Middlesex University Dubai for its optimum support for research, and for encouraging the production of work that attempts to evaluate the dynamic nature of our complex global society within the  context of tourism mobility. I think the book is timely and will hopefully provide a critical contribution to the sociology and politics of international tourism through the lens of citizenship".
The book is considered to be a must read for students and scholars in both the field of tourism studies and the social sciences. Importantly, the royalties generated by the book are being donated by the authors to the International Porter Protection Group, which is a volunteer group set up to support and improve the health and safety of mountain porters working for the trekking industry worldwide.
The book is the first to fully examine the role of tourism in wider society through a sociological analysis of the relationships between international tourism and citizenship, with a particular emphasis on movement and the right to travel. It focuses on key themes including: tourism and social citizenship rights; race, culture and minority rights; states, markets and the freedom of movement; tourism, peace and geo-politics; consumerism and class; and, ethical tourism, global citizenship and cosmopolitanism. The book concludes that the advancement of tourism is inextricably linked with the progression of social equity and mobility around the world.
Middlesex University Dubai campus offers a BA Honours International Tourism Management degree and more than 36 other undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across a wide range of subject areas. The campus is licensed by the Dubai government’s Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA). Furthermore, the University Quality Assurance International Board at KHDA reviews all programmes on offer in Dubai to ensure that the quality of programmes taught in Dubai are equivalent to those at the home campus in London.
