Empire Health Systems, a Spokane, Washington-based 388-bed hospital system with award-winning cardiac, orthopaedic and neonatal intensive care centers, faced a major strategic and capital challenge. With a capital infusion of approximately $100M required to remain competitive in its local market, the volunteer board entrusted with the stewardship of this valuable community asset needed a way to identify and examine all alternatives and come to a timely decision on the best way to move forward. The Board's decision would directly affect over 2,000 medical professionals and support staff and one third of the health care delivery for a region serving 1.6 million people.
