A focus group discussion (FGD) on sustainable energy and water use in the industry sector, hosted by Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, was held this morning. The group discussed the challenges faced by companies in being more energy and water efficient, as well as ways to encourage and enable them to do more in this area. A total of 65 participants, including industry representatives, solution providers, academia and research institutions, as well as non-governmental organisations (NGOs) with a keen interest in sustainable energy and water use, gave their views during this FGD.
2 Today's FGD is the third of a series of consultation exercises that is being conducted until end-July 2014 to reach out to a broad group of stakeholders in the people, private and public sectors as the Government reviews the Sustainable Singapore Blueprint (SSB) against a backdrop of climate change and other environmental concerns. The SSB was first released in April 2009 to set out a national framework and key strategies for Singapore's sustainable development. Its review is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
3 In the two previous FGDs on 31 May and 21 June 2014 respectively, participants discussed challenges and opportunities for further reducing and recycling waste in Singapore, as well as how we can best keep Singapore clean. The next FGD, which will focus on ‘Vibrant Spaces for the Community', will be hosted by Mr Desmond Lee, Minister of State for National Development, on 5 July 2014. Another FGD in July will discuss how we can encourage people to use greener forms of transport such as walking and cycling.
4 Members of the public are also welcome to give their comments on the topic of today's FGD, ie. sustainable energy and water use in the industry sector, via an online survey at http://www.sustainablesingapore.gov.sg/. An online copy of the 2009 Sustainable Singapore Blueprint can be found on the SSB website.
