The Prime Minister of Fiji launched the M-PAiSA mobile money transfer service on the Vodafone network in mid-2010. Fiji is also the first country in the Pacific to introduce a mobile money transfer service.

M-PAiSA allows users to send, receive, withdraw currency and buy recharge using a mobile phone. It is expected to expand and allow payments for utilities such as electricity and water rate bills and for pay TV channels in the future.

M-PAiSA from Vodafone Fiji, is the first mobile network in the region to launch a mobile phone based money transfer service. The service only operates with Fiji at present and is limited to areas where mobile coverage is available.

The M-PAiSA service originated in Africa where it is called M-Pesa. In Kenya the service attracted 1.6 million users in less than twelve months and has expanded to other African countries.
