(Golden, Colo) March 27, 2014MRIGlobal is pleased to announce that the Energy Systems Integration Facility at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has been awarded R&D Magazine’s Laboratory of the Year.

MRIGlobal is one of two partners in the Alliance for Sustainable Energy LLC, which manages the laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy. MRIGlobal has managed and operated NREL since 1977, when the laboratory came into existence as the Solar Energy Research Institute. NREL is the nation’s only laboratory dedicated to renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development.

Completed in April 2013, the Energy Systems Integration Facility is the first center designed to help public and private sector researchers scale up promising clean energy technologies and test how they interact with each other and the grid at utility scale. With 182,500 square feet, the $135 million facility houses more than 15 experimental laboratories and a high-performance computing data center with an innovative warm-water cooling system. The general contractor for the project was the Kansas City-based J.E. Dunn Construction Co.

“We’ve known that industry was eager for a place like ESIF, which allows utility companies and investors to see technology working in real time and on a large scale,” said Dan Arvizu, NREL Director and Executive Vice President, MRIGlobal.

“ESIF continues to demonstrate the importance of partnerships among the national labs, industry, and academia. We have many partners already doing work at ESIF, and many more have expressed interest in helping advance these technologies.”

The annual international competition receives entries from the best new and renovated laboratories. Projects are judged by a blue-ribbon panel of laboratory architects, engineers, equipment manufacturers, researchers and editors of R&D Magazine and Laboratory Design Newsletter.

This is the second Lab of the Year Recognition for NREL. In 2008, NREL was recognized by R&D magazine with a special award for the Science & Technology Facility. The 71,000-square-foot laboratory was the first federal laboratory building to achieve the highest Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building rating from the U.S. Green Buildings Council and marked the beginning of a series of LEED Platinum, high performance buildings, at NREL.

ESIF project team members will be honored during the Laboratory Design Conference to be held April 2-4 at the Westin Waltham Hotel, Waltham, Mass.
