Philippine mobile leader Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) is making rich multimedia content more accessible through its expansive 4G-LTE network nationwide, which allows subscribers to enjoy hassle-free mobile entertainment wherever they are in the country.
The availability of content services such as mobile music, books, magazines, games, and video offered by Smart has contributed to the fast-rising user demand for mobile data, which saw a 121% surge to over 15,000 terabytes (or 15 million gigabyte) of data exchanged through Smart’s network for the first half of 2014.
“We are making the leap toward 5G network connectivity to deliver on the promise of the best mobile multimedia experience to users, backed by the ‘nationwidest’ and most robust mobile network in the country today,” said Orlando B. Vea, Chief Wireless Advisor at Smart, referring to the recent activation of its first ‘5G’ LTE-Advanced site in the country in Mandaluyong City.
The availability of a robust mobile network and multimedia content offerings has likewise contributed in smartphone adoption among Smart’s subscribers, Vea added.
Today, more than a 20% of the telco’s user base is using Internet-enabled smartphones, which can be used to access multimedia services.
Best multimedia content
Some of these first-in-the-market, revolutionary content offerings by Smart include SPINNR, the country’s first mobile streaming service for mobile devices that has been deemed the number one music streaming app in the country.
Smart has also begun offering digital content that can be bought using subscribers’ cellphone load. This includes the likes of GameX, which gives users instant access to gaming e-Pins and various mobile games; and Buqo, which allows them to conveniently download and read digital books and magazines on their devices.
Just recently, Smart announced the availability of ViewStream for Android devices, which gives local sports aficionados a virtually buffer-free video streams of the Gilas Pilipinas games in the upcoming 2014 FIBA World Cup in September.
“All of these mobile multimedia services require a ‘supercharged’ network that can deliver the necessary bandwidth to make the user’s experience seamless and hassle-free. This is a promise that only Smart can deliver today,” Vea added.
Smart currently leads in the deployment of high-speed mobile broadband in the Philippines, with the country’s largest 4G network composed of more than 10,000 active 4G-enabled sites scattered all across the country.
Smart’s nationwide coverage is backed by PLDT’s fiber optic cable connection which has now reached nearly 90,000 kilometers, or more than four times than competition. To further strengthen this domestic fiber optic network (DFON), PLDT also set up third legs in its fiber loops in key areas nationwide, the latest of which is the Bohol DFON project that provided redundant links between the Visayas and Mindanao.
