The University of Maryland in Baltimore currently has multiple openings for a Research Specialist, Clinical in the School of Medicine, Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center. The selected candidates will function as a single specialist in a clinical setting and is responsible for providing the highest technical expertise to research programs, studies and/or projects and overseeing clinical research activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Plans and carries out key elements of a clinical research project.
  • Screens patients for eligibility to enter research studies
  • Ensures that diagnostic tests required for entry to a study are ordered and performed
  • Assists investigators in obtaining informed consent
  • Conducts patient/family education concerning clinical studies
  • Follows the clinical course of patients entered onto clinical research studies by obtaining results of diagnostic studies, assessing patients for complications, and recording patient data onto study forms
  • Assists pharmaco-kinetics specialist in obtaining clinical samples from patients as needed, prepares samples for processing
  • Records pertinent patient information on flow sheets and other case report forms
  • Assists data manager in maintaining clinical database(s) on patients participating in clinical studies and/or seen by a specific clinical service
  • Assists clinical investigator with study initiation, conduction, and completion by:
  • Assisting regulatory coordinators with communicating with the Institutional Review Board (IRB)
  • Confirming appropriateness of drug doses in accordance with protocols
  • Acting as a consultant to members of the health care team
  • Assisting data management with preparing study results for presentation and/or publication
  • Preparing responses to audits conducted by study sponsors and other regulatory entities
  • Representing department at research and protocol initiation meetings. Acts as liaison between the institution and the study sponsor by preparing study reports and communicating with clinical study monitors
  • Attending and participating in various in-service and external trainings, workshops, conferences and other relevant programs for professional growth and development

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in epidemiology, sociology, psychology, nursing or field of study related to the research of the clinic.
  • Three (3) years’ experience in clinical research including two (2) years in the relevant research specialization.
  • Consideration may be given for a unique combination of education and experience.* May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.

* Bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field with at least 18 credits in a field related to the research of the clinic, or Bachelor’s degree in unrelated field with at least one year of experience in a field directly related to the research of the clinic. Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Able to assist regulatory coordinators with communicating protocol modifications to faculty and staff Ability to understand and utilize scientific/medical terminology and research theory in both oral and written communications.
  • Ability to take a lead role in performing and directing various advanced, routine, and maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to perform independent projects and to serve as a consultant in area of technical specialty.
  • Ability to use measurable and verifiable information for making decisions or judgments.
  • Skill in statistical programming, interpretation and data analysis using statistical software as well as spreadsheet and database software applications.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of scientific theory and computer capability to design and recommend changes to methods for clinical research.
  • Ability to network with, and present information to key groups and individuals.
