The World Series Boxing (WSB) is an international boxing competition without headguards or vests, with professional-style scoring, three judges and one referee and one supervisor. A WSB match consists of five bouts, with each bout consisting of five rounds of three minutes each. The team with most wins from five bouts wins the match.
There are five weight categories in the WSB: Bantamweight (54kg); Lightweight (61kg); Middleweight (73kg); Light heavyweight (85kg) and Heavyweight (91+kg)
Brief on the visiting boxers:
Akhil Kumar a household name and one of the top favourites. He strongly believes in the phrase ‘No pain, no gain’ and applies it in his boxing too. An iconic boxer in India to say the least, Akhil’s biggest achievement was his Bantamweight (54 kg) gold at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. He has represented India at two Olympic games in 2004 and 2008.
Jitender Kumar didn’t have to look far for inspiration as his cousin, Akhil Kumar has him under his wings. He has represented the Indian Boxing team and has won the Commonwealth Games 2006 bronze, Asian Championships 2007 bronze, AIBA World Cup 2008 bronze and 2nd AIBA Asia Olympic Boxing Qualifying Tournament 2008 gold.
Balvir Singh’s elder brother’s passion for the sport got him into the sport. He became the World cadet champion and India’s first ever junior world champion in 2002. His career achievements include the World Cadet Championship gold medal – 2002, the Commonwealth Championships silver medal – 2005 and the Senior National championship gold medal – 2004 & 2007.
Mandeep Jangra was clear from beginning that he was born to be a boxer. He liked the game for its individualism. His intent only got stronger after he saw Akhil Kumar’s heroism at the Beijing Games 2008.
Paul ‘The Machine’ Koon became a boxing sensation after an unidentified policeman who stopped a pugnacious 13-year old Koon involved in a street fight. The officer advised Koon that his jabs and uppercuts would be of more use in a boxing gym. Today his boxing achievements include the 3-0 WSB record (Miami Gallos), 49-8 career win/loss record, 3X Gloves Champion, the USA Boxing Athlete of the Month and the 3X Pennsylvania Champion.
Trent ‘Thunder from down under’ Rawlins initially a rugby league player, Rawlins picked up boxing gloves just while training to keep fit for his first sport. The experience of training individually inspired the 25-year old to take up boxing as a career.
Sanjin Pol ‘The Interceptor’ Vrgoc was inspired by two people to be what he is today, his elder brother and Bruce Lee. After seeing his elder brother train in boxing for fitness, he decided to take up boxing as a full time profession. Further, Bruce Lee starrer Enter the Dragon only fuelled the fire inside him to take up a full contact sport.
