Gurgaon, March 2013:- In-line with the Government of India objective to commemorate the discovery of Raman Effect by our eminent Indian scientist CV Raman, DPG institute of Technology & Management celebrated National Science Day with the students in the college. Focal theme for National Science Day 2013 stands as “Genetically Modified Crops and Food Security”.
Addressing the gathering of students and faculty, Principal DPGITM, Mr. J S Mahanwal said that the college is celebrating this occasion not only to create awareness and enthusiasm among the students but also to popularize Science & Technology to strengthen scientific temper among the pupil.
DPGITM Chairman, Rajendra Gahlot stated that the effects of Science are clearly visible in changing lifestyles. Each year the Government of India declares a focal theme for discussions and recognitions. This is the institute’s attempt to encourage students to scientifically embark their passion for new research and innovation.
The one day programme was divided into an overview and two sessions. While the introductory note was on the importance of National Science Day and its focal theme, the other sessions were presided by the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Physics. Both the streams of Sciences detailed on the causes and effects of scientific processes, natural resources, weather & drought phenomena on the agricultural productivity.
Panel discussions were held to elaborate on genetically modified crops, organic farming and the effects of pesticides on agricultural productivity. While scientists focus on innovations and advancements, it is the human act that shapes it as progressive or devastating. Discussions touched upon both the aspects – improved fertilisers and organic farming to raise per acre yield, and the use of pesticides and its chemical effects on living entities.
Students positively welcomed this initiative. Keshav, a student at DPGITM, said that the sessions added to knowing the Governments activities in promoting Science & Technology. Rohini had a view on encouraging such activities to motivate students to take up research field for the betterment of mankind.
