National University of Malaysia Unleashes Student Learning With Nortel
June 17, 2009
KUALA LUMPUR - Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), the National University of Malaysia, is the latest educational establishment in Asia to ensure its students and staff can benefit from a 21st century educational experience, thanks to a new high performing and reliable campus network solution from Nortel* [TSX: NT | OTC: NRTLQ].
"Students and staff have an insatiable appetite for knowledge, and they are increasingly hungry users of bandwidth," said Professor Ir. Dr. Othman A. Karim, director / CIO, Centre for Information Technology, UKM. "It is important that we keep ahead of demand by boosting the capacity and performance of our core network. Use of 10G Ethernet will deliver a next-generation reliable network capable of supporting research and collaboration at unprecedented speed - and Nortel's SMLT technology will ensure a reliable, easy-to-manage solution that meets our current and future needs."
With more than 25,000 students and 8000 staff, UKM is one of Malaysia's largest universities. Formed to deliver an innovative education with roots in traditional knowledge and culture, UKM is expanding its online usage by introducing a range of online applications including e-learning, network-intensive research applications, VoIP, IPTV and more.
These applications empower students and faculty to teach and learn in collaborative new ways, and their successful deployment provides an important competitive differentiator for universities. However, they also require more bandwidth than UKM previously had available over its 1G campus network. The new network solution, implemented by Nortel partner Teliti Computers Sdn Bhd, will boost network bandwidth by a factor of ten, providing 10G Ethernet via a fiber-optic network across the university's main campus at Bangi.
"Higher education institutions have always put immense pressure on the core network, and the digital learning style and always-on lifestyle of today's students are stretching conventional connectivity to the limit," said Bernard Chiang, general manager, Enterprise, ASEAN. "UKM's move to upgrade its network to 10G will pave the way for a whole range of new learning capabilities, attracting top quality students and faculty to the university."
The network will utilize Nortel's SMLT (Split Multi-Link Trunking) technology, which provides exceptional resiliency to ensure voice, video and other applications stay connected despite link, switch or site equipment failures. At the same time, Nortel's solution is proven to provide 20 times the performance and seven times the resiliency at up to half the total cost of ownership of competing solutions.**
UKM's upgrade is based on Nortel's solutions that are optimized for real-time communications. It is built on the foundation of the Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch (ERS) 8600, a scalable platform for converged applications that combines terabit performance with unique Nortel security and reliability technologies such as SMLT, Routed SMLT, IP VPN-Lite (IP-in-IP) for virtual routing domains. It also includes the Nortel ERS 5530-24TFD, a next-generation stackable 10G Ethernet Layer 3 routing switch with support for up to 192 10/100/1000M Ethernet ports or 16 10G Ethernet ports per stack.
Nortel's innovative solutions are helping education institutions worldwide to lower their total cost of ownership, attract top quality students and faculty, empowering faculty and staff to be more effective while increasing campus safety. More than 10,000 education customers have deployed Nortel solutions including the recently announced agreements with the University of the East and Asia Pacific College this year, and counts numerous higher educational establishments across Asia among its customers. These include Australia's RMITUniversity, Macquarie University, Edith Cowan University, University of Ballarat, University of Western Sydney and the Victoria Education Research Network (VERNet), China's Fudan University and University of Petroleum, Japan's University of Tsukuba and Thailand's KMITL.
