WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The Chief of Naval Personnel announced June 30 that Bay Defense Alliance is the Navy's nominee for the Calendar Year 2013 Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher Distinguished Civilian Humanitarian Award.
The 30-member non-profit organization of community leaders works to improve, preserve and enhance Naval Support Facility (NSF) Panama City, Florida, and military installations in the surrounding area by leveraging the abilities and skills of volunteers.
Their contributions helped add several major amenities to NSF Panama City, including more sidewalks, a second base exit and additional undeveloped land for new facilities. The Bay Defense Alliance also expended more than 1,254 volunteer hours in support of morale-boosting events for active-duty service members, Wounded Warriors and military families.
"Bay Defense Alliance is the most selfless and generous group of patriots in the United States," said Navy Cmdr. Hung Cao, commanding officer, Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center. "They are the reason so many of our service members choose to make Bay County their home after their faithful service to our great nation."
The Bay Defense Alliance will compete with nominees from the other services for the Fisher Award. The winner will be honored during a ceremony this fall at the Pentagon.
The Fisher award recognizes and honors a private sector individual or organization that has demonstrated exceptional patriotism and humanitarian concerns for members of the Armed Forces and their families. The Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher Distinguished Civilian Humanitarian Award program was established in 1996 by the Department of Defense in honor of Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher.
The date of the ceremony has not been determined.
