SILVERDALE, Wash. (NNS) -- Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) Bangor's Trident Inn Galley celebrated its second consecutive Edward F. Ney Memorial Award, June 30.
The Captain Edward F. Ney Memorial Award was established in 1958 by the Secretary of the Navy and the International Food Executive Association to improve the quality of food service in the Navy.
"Without the greatest team of culinary specialists, we could not have been so successful," said Cmdr. Anthony Pecoraro, executive officer, NBK. "Your hard work and dedication ensure the Sailors and Marines that come through that door receive the best food in the Navy."
The installation has remained the Navy's best galley in the Large General Mess (shore) category.
"This award is thanks to a lot of hard work, a combination effort from Culinary Specialists and civilians," said Chief Warrant Officer 4 Erick Van Hofwegen, NBK food service officer. "It's very rare to win back to back."
Roughly 1,000 Sailors, Marines and civilians are served daily between NBK upper and two lower base galleys. They currently have more than 35 CSs and more than 30 civilians working between the galleys.
"You support the fleet, fighter, family," said Rear Adm. Bette Bolivar, commander, Navy Region Northwest. "You're behind the scenes; you are the first to come in and the last to leave."
Previous awards for this facility include 13 consecutive five star accreditations and eight previous Ney Awards.
During the ceremony Capt. Thomas Zwolfer, commanding officer, NBK and Bolivar were awarded the Ney Award. In turn with Navy tradition, Capt. Zwolfer handed the award over to the most junior member of the command, Culinary Specialist Seaman Recruit Stephanie Hallada.
"This award shows we're one of the best galleys there is," said Hallada.
After the ceremony Bolivar, Zwolfer, Van Hofwegen and Hallada cut a commemorative cake.
