SILVERDALE, Wash. (NNS) -- Navy Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) hosted a kick-off breakfast for the society's annual active duty fund drive at Trident Inn Galley on Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) Bangor, Feb. 13.

The drive is held every year with a goal of 100 percent contact for all Sailors and Marines stationed on NBK and its tenant commands.

"Our goal is always to make every Sailor and Marine aware of NMCRS," said Capt. Scott Hogan, Navy Region Northwest chief of staff, and a native of Rutland, Vt. "Every dollar donated goes to assist those who need it; none of it goes to overhead costs for Navy Marine Corps Relief Society."

The drive ensures that every Sailor and Marine is aware of the various methods of donating and NMCRS services.

"Individuals can donate through cash, their bank account, and now through debit and credit cards," said Kathy Phillips, NMCRS NBK Bangor office director. "Donations are also still accepted through a one time transaction or through a monthly allotment."

The society can assist with unforeseen circumstances such as a house fire or similar life altering events.

Phillips said that NMCRS started with helping service members with medical bills and through the great depression. NMCRS will strive to continue that history of helping Sailors and Marines when they need it most.

Established Jan. 23, 1904, initial funding for that first year came from the proceeds of the 1903 Army-Navy football game held at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Penn. During the first year NMCRS donated $9,500 to widows and families of enlisted service members.

In 2013 the NMCRS provided financial assistance to 65,358 service members, widows, and veterans totaling $48.6 million.
