KEYPORT, Wash. (NNS) -- Navy Band Northwest (NBNW) held a clinic for Brier Terrace Middle School students at the Naval Undersea Museum's Jack Murdock Auditorium, Feb. 13.

NBNW's "Five Star Brass" quintet and woodwind quartet performed for the more than 20 7th and 8th grade students attended the clinic.

Lt. Robert Coats, NBNW director, greeted everyone before performing for the students.

"We are excited you are here to spend the day with us," said Coats.

After playing a few musical scores, Lt. Coats opened the floor for students to ask questions about how to play the instruments correctly. During this time some of the band members played their instruments solo, so students could hear what they sounded like separate from the ensemble.

Coats also spoke about the mission of NBNW and the role the band plays in the community and for recruiting.

He also went on to explain that some parts of the band such as the "Passage" music group may travel more to perform shows to a broader spectrum of people.

"This is priceless," said Allyn Turner, Brier Terrace Middle School assistant principal. "This is a fantastic opportunity for the students, and having time like this is so important."

After NBNW finished performing the students took the stage, led by Angela Zumbo, Brier Terrace Middle School music program director, and performed two musical numbers.

"This has been a treat for us to hear such fantastic performers, and I know it will energize our work," said Zumbo. "It's opened the student's eyes to other ways to make music."

Navy Band Northwest's 's mission is to provide musical support for official Navy functions, Navy recruiting efforts, and community outreach performances in the Pacific Northwest. Sailors assigned to Navy Band Northwest participate in more than 400 engagements each year in both military and civilian events.
