More Marriott hotels expected to join program as it expands globally.
Bethesda, Md., April 1, 2014 - Marriott International (NASDAQ: MAR) properties are among the 3,700 U.S. hotels that have been awarded bronze, silver, gold or platinum status in the TripAdvisor® GreenLeader™ Program. Developed in consultation with the United Nations Environment Program, the U.S. Green Building Council, ENERGY STAR®, and the International Center for Responsible Tourism Canada, the TripAdvisor GreenLeaders program invites hotels to apply for status based on their environmental practices, then showcases the award-winners to consumers on their website.
Globally, 1,379 Marriott properties have achieved the GreenLeaders status. “Travelers want to be ‘green’ and contribute to the conservation and preservation of the environment,” said Denise Naguib, vice president, sustainability and supplier diversity for Marriott International. “Nearly half of our global hotel portfolio currently has GreenLeaders status through the TripAdvisor GreenLeaders program and more will have this status when the program expands to consumers in Canada and Europe later this year. This tool will help them easily plan and book their next eco-friendly trip."
With the expansion of the GreenLeaders Program into 19 new markets, eco-conscious travelers in countries such as the United Kingdom, France, and Germany will now have the ability to select from more of Marriott’s properties, over 100 of which are LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified, __ having earned Platinum status from GreenLeaders.
