Analysis by ESG Labs confirms Express5800/ft series can reduce overall costs of virtualizing mission-critical business applications compared to traditional HA clusters.

Irving, TX, August 29, 2011 -- NEC Corporation of America (NEC), a leading provider and integrator of advanced communications, networking and IT solutions, today announced that its NEC Express5800/R320b fault-tolerant servers, which are powered by the six-core Intel® Xeon® processor 5600 series, now support VMware® vSphere™ for virtualization.

In a recent independent analysis1commissioned by NEC, Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) tested the Express5800/R320b-M4 versus traditional high availability (HA) server cluster - both running VMware vSphere 4.0 update 2. The results: NEC's Express5800/ft series achieved a 39 percent cost savings resulting from reduced licensing and maintenance.

"In today's face-paced, always on mobile business environment, even the smallest amount of downtime can have a major impact," said Brian Garrett, vice president of ESG Lab. "ESG Lab believes the NEC Express5800 FT solution helps solve these problems, making affordable non-stop business a reality for organizations both large and small."

Building a VMware vSphere virtualization platform on NEC FT servers can significantly reduce the risk of failure when compared to non-redundant servers. In addition, hardware-based fault tolerance can provide significant performance improvements over software-based fault tolerant solutions. Powered by Intel Xeon processors, the NEC Express5800/R320b-M4 achieves 1.4 times the performance of previous models2.

NEC Express5800/ft series fault-tolerant servers are designed for hosting mission-critical business applications in a wide variety of data centers and industries. The Express5800/ft series provides redundancy for essential hardware components including CPU and memory running in lockstep to avoid system downtime due to hardware failures.

The Intel Xeon processor 5600 series are ideally suited for a wide range of infrastructure, cloud, high-density and high-performance computing applications.

"The combination of virtualization technologies and fault tolerant servers, such as VMware vSphere and NEC's Express5800/ft series, offers a significant redundancy benefit for mission critical workloads that up until recent months have not been candidates for virtualization," said Pauline Nist, general manager of Intel's Mission Critical Segment.. "Intel and NEC have collaborated on fault tolerant technology for years, and customers should feel confident in its ability to deliver high reliability under high workloads."
