German-based provider of Web conferencing solutions offsets its computing centers’ CO2-emissions.

Netviewer AG of Germany, Europe’s leading provider of Web conferencing solutions, has found a way to make online meetings and collaboration climate neutral. In cooperation with the non-profit organization PrimaKlima weltweit e.V. (GreatClimate worldwide) the company is reforesting 5 hectares of rain forest in Mexico in order to compensate for the CO

2

emitted by its computing centers over the course of 15 months.

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) views information and

as important tools in the fight against climate change. For instance, Web conferences often make travel by plane and car unnecessary, thereby helping to cut back on large amounts of CO2emissions. But, of course, computers consume electricity. As a result, running the servers and computers that enable online meetings also negatively affects the climate. “Anyone who chooses to hold online meetings instead of traveling to business appointments is already doing a great deal for the environment. But we are now taking it one step further and living up to the Green IT philosophy. From now on, every meeting held with our software will be climate neutral,” according to Jörg Mayer, Chief Sales Officer of Netviewer.

In order to compensate for all of the energy consumed during a Web conference, Netviewer supports a reforestation project in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in Michoacán, Central Mexico. The project is managed by the non-profit organization PrimaKlima weltweit e.V. Netviewer is financing the replanting of trees in an area as large as seven soccer fields. A forested area of this size removes as much harmful CO2from the atmosphere as Netviewer's IT infrastructure produces in the course of 15 months through energy consumption. Another benefit of the reforestation project is the preservation of the threatened Monarch butterfly's habitat.

determines how much CO2

emissions a company can reduce by using Web conferences instead of on-site meetings. As an extra bonus, Netviewer will donate one additional tree to the project every time a new user downloads a free trial version of its software
