WASHINGTON, DC – New America announced today that Suzanne DiMaggio will lead a new and innovative program focused on the future of U.S.-Iran relations, beginning April 21, 2014. The program will look at Iran in the context of the broader region and emphasize ties to the Gulf states, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and central Asian countries. The initiative will include a series of policy dialogues that bring together Americans and Iranians, as well as regional and other major players, to generate new ideas to address a range of strategic challenges.

DiMaggio most recently served as the Vice President of Global Policy Programs at the Asia Society, where she set the strategic direction for moving the Society’s work in the policy arena from a public program-focused forum to a global think tank aimed at tackling the most critical challenges facing the United States and Asia. Prior to joining Asia Society in 2007, she was the Vice President of Policy Programs at the United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA), where she directed programs that advanced multilateral approaches to global problem solving and advocated in support of constructive US international engagement.

An expert dialogue practitioner, she has been directing Track II diplomatic initiatives with partners in the Middle East and Asia on regional security, terrorism, nonproliferation, sustainable development, and global environmental governance. Since 2002, she has been leading a series of U.S.-Iran policy dialogues, which serves as one of the few bridges facilitating sustained, face-to-face discussions between Americans and Iranians. She has authored a chapter on U.S.-Iran track II diplomacy in The Iran Primer: Power, Politics and U.S. Policy, a publication from the US Institute of Peace.

"Suzanne DiMaggio has been at the forefront of the efforts to create real change in the long-fraught relationship between the U.S. and Iran,” said Peter Bergen, Director of New America’s International Security Program. “She also possesses deep expertise about Asia and so it is with real excitement that we welcome her to the New America community of thinkers and doers."

“I could not be more pleased to welcome Suzanne DiMaggio to New America,” said Anne-Marie Slaughter, President and CEO of New America.  “Her work on Iran over the past decade has been enormously important.  She is an exciting thinker who will add to our growing body of national security work throughout the Middle East and Asia and to new work on regional and global governance. We are equally delighted that she will join our strong and growing team in New York.”

“With Anne-Marie Slaughter’s dynamic leadership and a team of cutting edge thinkers, New America stands at the vanguard of redefining how to approach the pressing issues of our time and move things in a positive direction,” DiMaggio said. “I am honored to be a part of this team and thrilled to call New America my new home.”
