Whether it's by a river, canal, lake or the coast, a waterside new home not only offers an interesting and ever-changing view to savour: there are often opportunities for homeowners to discover and enjoy a range of hobbies and pastimes, from wildlife and angling to sailing and other water sports. Consequently, some of the UK's top housebuilders have sought out excellent waterside locations for new homes, providing a wide array of property styles for all types of property buyers.
Berkeley Homes' Holborough Lakes development, northwest of Maidstone, Kent, is distinguished by its New England-style exteriors, complete with verandas and pastel-shaded weatherboarding, as well as its splendid lakeside location. There are apartments, townhouses and houses available, with one to five bedrooms, ensuring a diverse mix of residents when the scheme is complete early in 2011. One- and two-bedroom apartments are currently priced £129,950 to £207,500. Five-bedroom townhouses start at £329,995. Water features and a water sports academy on site enhance the community's superb rural position, yet proximity to Ebbsfleet International station brings London St Pancras within easy reach, with an express journey time of 37 minutes.
There are just a few two-bedroom apartments still available, from £214,995, at Baxter Court in Berkeley's The Waterside at Royal Worcester development, a canalside scheme in one of the West Midlands' more picturesque cities. The homes all have views of the adjacent Worcester and Birmingham Canal and are located close to Worcester's famous cathedral, within easy reach of the city centre.
Barratt Homes is offering a rare opportunity to purchase a front-line coastal apartment at Honeycombe Beach in Bournemouth. A selection of one- and two bedroom properties are on offer here, with sea-view homes starting at £363,995. If you're in the market for unadulterated luxury, you might consider the breathtaking executive and penthouse apartments, priced from £950,000 to £1.1 million. If you're willing to forego the sea views, a one-bedroom apartment at the rear of the development is priced from a more modest £197,995. For a limited time, Barratt is running a deposit-match scheme, where the company will contribute up to 5% towards your deposit, available on certain apartments.
Redrow has created a community of spacious family homes on the outskirts of Maldon, Essex. Much of the town's long, auspicious history is dominated by its importance as a coastal resort and The Lakes takes full advantage of its location, overlooking the Blackwater estuary with the river, a lake and quayside all close by. There is a selection of four- and five-bedroom houses here in differing styles, priced from £329,950 upwards. Some of the plots qualify buyers to take advantage of Redrow's part-exchange programme to ease their move.
Just a handful of homes remain at Canal Quarter, a Bellway development in Droylsden, four miles east of Manchester. The remaining properties are waterfront, three-bedroom homes overlooking the Ashton-under-Lyne canal. While the local area has a very pleasant countryside feel, with meadows, a reservoir and woodland in the immediate neighbourhood, the city centre, M60 and airport are all within easy reach. Prices start at £154,950, with part-exchange available too.
