New Student Convocation is happening Sunday at 7:30 p.m. on the UA Mall.
The University of Arizona Pep Band, along with Wilbur and Wilma Wildcat, will help welcome thousands of incoming students into the Wildcat family during New Student Convocation this weekend.
The ceremony will take place on the UA Mall on Sunday at 7:30 p.m.
"This is their official welcome to campus," said Mary Venezia, assistant director of enrollment initiatives and special events. "Freshmen, transfer students and all other new students are invited to be welcomed to the UA. We teach them traditions and important, valuable lessons, and celebrate school starting the next day."
This year's convocation will feature a more casual and interactive style than the traditional ceremonies of the past.
Rather than being held in McKale Memorial Center, students are invited to lay blankets on the Mall, enjoy some eegee's and watch the ceremony, which will be held outside just east of the newly renovated Old Main near the cactus garden.
Issac Ortega, president of the Associated Students of the UA, will host the event.
A short film featuring Wilbur and Wilma will teach students about UA traditions, academics and the campus community.
Throughout the New Student Convocation, students and viewers watching the live stream will be able to interact through social media using #WildcatReady.
In the event of inclement weather, the outside portion of the ceremony may be canceled, although the rest of the event will still be streamed online and in UA Residence Halls. The decision will be made by 4 p.m. that day.
