To honor outstanding contributions to our community in 2017, the Volunteer Center of Brown County and Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) encourage individuals and groups to submit nominations for this spring's 30th annual WPS Volunteer Awards. Nominations are now open and will be accepted until 4 p.m. March 2.

Originally known as the Golden Rule Awards, the WPS Volunteer Awards highlight and celebrate the efforts of volunteers who enhance the quality of life in Brown, Shawano, Oconto, Kewaunee and Manitowoc counties. The ceremony now honors outstanding individuals or groups in eight categories each year. Each recipient and runner-up is given a donation from the Volunteer Center of Brown County to provide to the nonprofit or charitable organization of their choice.

"For 30 years, we have proudly recognized individuals and organizations whose selfless work has made an invaluable impact in northeast Wisconsin," said Eric Sponholtz, executive director – Volunteer Center of Brown County. "We are proud to partner with WPS and the Greater Green Bay Community Foundation to celebrate all volunteers and their determination to build strong communities."

Award categories and category sponsors include:

Individual awards:

  • Youth Volunteer Award – UnitedHealthcare
  • Adult Volunteer Award – Georgia-Pacific
  • Volunteer In Education Award – Green Bay Packaging
  • Volunteer Leadership Award – Constellation
  • Heart of Gold Lifetime Achievement Award – Morgan Stanley

Group awards:

  • Small Group Award – Bellin Health
  • Large Group Award – Green Bay Packers Give Back

Individual or group award:

  • Arts & Culture Award – Aon

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Volunteer Awards, the Volunteer Center will present each award recipient and runner-up with an increased donation of $1,000 and $500, respectively, to provide to the nonprofit or charity of their choice. The youth recipient and runner-up will receive scholarships in the same monetary amounts.

Nominations for the WPS Volunteer Awards can be submitted online at, by emailing a nomination form to, or by mailing a nomination form to the Volunteer Center of Brown County. All awards nominees are eligible to be selected for a "Wisconsin Heroes" award, given annually by the state of Wisconsin, and the Volunteer Center of Brown County's "Volunteer of the Week" honor, which is featured throughout the year in the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

This year's WPS Volunteer Awards will be held on April 19 at the KI Convention Center in downtown Green Bay. More than 125 nominations covering approximately 3,400 volunteers were submitted last year.
