March 21, 2014 - March 22, 2014

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

During the 2014 Nuclear Security Summit (NSS), nearly 60 government leaders will come together in the Netherlands to discuss measures to improve global nuclear security. As was the case for the 2010 Washington NSS and 2012 Seoul NSS, representatives from the nuclear industry and nongovernmental expert community are organizing complementary side events to engage a fuller scope of nuclear security stakeholders and support the NSS process. The nongovernmental Nuclear Knowledge Summit (NKS) and the Nuclear Industry Summit will be held in Amsterdam and take place on March 21-22 and March 23-24, respectively. The official governmental NSS will take place in The Hague on March 24-25.

The NKS will engage approximately 200 international nongovernmental experts from NSS countries in a forward-looking discussion on strengthening the global nuclear security regime. Participants will examine how to more fully utilize existing nuclear security mechanisms, improve information sharing and peer review, advance the security of fissile and radiological materials, and pursue regional approaches to progress. It will also feature high-level keynote speeches, perspectives from the nuclear industry, and views on cybersecurity. The NKS will be open to the media.

The NKS is being organized by Netherlands Institute of International Relations ‘Clingendael’ in cooperation with the Fissile Materials Working Group (FMWG) and the Asan Institute for Policy Studies. The FMWG and the Asan Institute contribute both substantive and organizational knowledge to the planning of this Dutch-hosted event, as each organization played an instrumental role in convening the previous expert side summits. The Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs is also among the sponsors of the NKS. More information at http://www.knowledgesummit.org/.
