O’Melveny Receives NLADA 2011 Beacon of Justice Award
Recognizes Innovative Law Firms that Protect Equal Justice Through Appellate Litigation
Los Angeles, CA, December 22, 2011 ─ O’Melveny & Myers LLP has been selected to receive the National Legal Aid & Defender Association (NLADA) 2011 Beacon of Justice Award, which honors law firms that have “innovative public-private partnerships that protect equal justice for all through appellate litigation.” As one of 14 recipients of the award, O’Melveny was honored at the NLADA Exemplar Awards Dinner on December 6, 2011, at the Union Station in Washington, DC.
Lawyers in O’Melveny’s preeminent Appellate Practice regularly use their talents to advance the causes of the poor, achieving remarkable results in appellate courts at all levels, including the United States Supreme Court. The NLADA’s review committee was “genuinely impressed by the investment of time and legal representation” O’Melveny has provided in a number of appellate litigation matters, most recently the influential Supreme Court cases Carachuri-Rosendo v. Holder and Abuelhawa v. United States.
O’Melveny lawyers from around the country participate in the Firm’s pro bono appellate programs in the Ninth and Sixth Circuits, handling cases assigned by the judges, and winning reversals in a series of immigration and civil rights/Section 1983 cases. O’Melveny also provides pro bono appellate representation to indigent parties through its clinics at two leading law schools, Harvard and UCLA. Firm lawyers team with law students to tackle appeals raising cutting-edge legal issues involving the Second Amendment, prisoner’s rights, and immigration matters, providing invaluable hands-on legal training in the process.
“These 14 firms have showed a true commitment to justice by stepping up to represent issues and people that would otherwise be forced to navigate the appellate process without any guidance,” said NLADA president and CEO Jo-Ann Wallace. “The outcomes in these cases have been true victories not only for the parties to the case, but for the greater justice system. NLADA is deeply grateful to these firms for their contributions to the quest for access to justice for all.”
NLADA, founded in 1911, is the oldest and largest non-profit association of individual legal professionals and legal organizations devoted to ensuring the delivery of legal services to the poor in the US. For 100 years, NLADA has secured access to justice for people who cannot afford counsel through the creation and improvement of legal institutions, advocacy, training, and the development of nationally applicable standards. NLADA serves as the collective voice for both civil legal services and public defense services throughout the nation.
